Happy Halloween!!

*Insert pumpkin emoji here*

If you are celebrating Halloween, wherever you are in the world I hope you have an amazing time and get a load of treats!  But not too many because your dentist probably won't be too pleased! ;)

This is one of the prints I did in my art unit and even though I don't like spiders, I reckon this one is pretty cute!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

Don't Feel Guilty

It's official.  My last assignment for this semester has been submitted and I am now on holidays!  *insert cheering and celebratory music and confetti*

I'd like to say that I'm going to be doing something interesting now that I have no more classes or assignments but in all honestly I'll be cleaning, catching up on shows, sleeping, catching up with friends and exercising.  The mess that is my room now that all my assignments are is crazy!  And it's also spread into the sitting room as well which isn't the best!

From my art unit I've got over a hundred prints both good and bad now and they're currently everywhere.  I had to go through them all and pick the best ones for my self directed work and then pick the best ones of each technique which we covered during the semester.  And now that those prints are away being assessed, I've got all the leftovers and I don't know what to do with them!  I want to frame a bunch of them and also give a few to some friends but I've got to find a place to put the rest of them!  There is no chance that I'll be throwing them out because I'm just too happy with them!

I've also been slack and haven't completely cleaned up the aftermath from my furniture assignment.  Let's just say that the drawings and equipment for that assignment are in piles...  Which need to be further sorted and put away!

BUT!   The best thing about having no more assessments is that I can go and watch YouTube videos without feeling guilty!  I'd sometimes watch them as a break but would always fall into the "oh I'll only watch one more video" and then five videos later I'm sitting there wishing I never went onto YouTube!

And I'll be able to catch up on tv shows I've missed out on!  I started watching Scream Queens and I LOVE it!  It's hilarious and has some gripping moments and I am obsessed!  The characters are amazing and I will be devastated if Denise Hemphill dies.  She has some cracker lines and some of my favourite scenes are the ones where she is in them!

I also have to catch up on Castle.  I haven't watched an episode in way too long and it's going to be a massive Castle marathon to get up to date.  I'm not complaining though haha I've missed watching Castle every week :)

It will also be nice to just get out of the house and enjoy myself and not be thinking that I should be inside working away on assignments.  Hanging out with friends and going to see family - it will be wonderful!

And the best bit about it all?  I won't feel guilty about it!!!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

25 Minutes at The Gorge

I'd have to say I'm pretty lucky with where I live and also the city I get to spend a lot of my time in.  Just minutes from the city is The Cataract Gorge is a short walk from the centre of town and it's definitely a popular attraction with both the locals and also tourists!

I hadn't been there for a while and after a full day in the silk screen room making prints for my art folio (you can see that post here!), my friend Natalie and myself took a little trip to the Gorge!  It was such a nice day and even though I wasn't exactly dressed appropriately for walking (thongs/flip-flops aren't ideal) we still had a good walk around the reserve!

From where we parked the car, walking around The Gorge and back to the car took us 25 minutes and it was a pretty good walk!  I need to get myself a pair of walking shoes so I can do walks like this more often!  Once I've finished my art folio, I'm going to be heading out and going on more walks, looking forward to this!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

Two Days In The Silk Screen Room

Officially semester 2 has come to an end and we are currently on study period.  Study period for me isn't a time where I study for exams as in my degree we don't have them but what I do have are highly weighted assignments and folios.  The only thing I have left to hand in is my folio for my art unit and once that is submitted it's holidays for me!

I went into uni on my day off to get more prints done for my art folio and after many disasters I knew I needed to go back in and get some more prints out if I wanted to feel confident about what I was submitting!  I ended up focusing on silk screening, as out of the three processes we looked at during the semester, it was the one which I enjoyed the most and found the most satisfaction when my prints were produced!  The majority of my silk screen prints were made with me making stencils with freezer paper and then going over them with ink, I had wanted to use a photo emulsion which would allow me to make prints of photographs I'd taken but we ran out of the emulsion so I had to scrap that idea!

So before last Thursday, I made a bunch of little stencils which were silhouettes of shapes and objects but were made out of a series of smaller shapes.  I had a love heart made from triangles, a wonky little street view, a palm tree with squares and triangles and quite a few more!  I'd wanted to try this sort of concept out after I did research on an artist and saw a few of her pieces!  I'm not the most talented person when it comes to drawing but absolutely loved doing these abstract silhouette type pieces!

I got so much work done in these two days which I was so happy with and also the prints which I produced I was SO extremely chuffed with!  I usually stick to one colour when I print or mixing a few and having a rainbow/ombre effect happening but I managed to get two separate block colours into one of my prints and it's probably my most favourite print which I've done.  I drew a pineapple and then cut out shapes in it so it would be abstract and follow with what I'd already been doing.  I mixed the most vibrant green ink and really wish I'd made more so I could take some home and used this to get the top part of the pineapple and then set all the prints aside to dry completely!  On two previous occasions, I'd thought my prints were dry and they weren't and long story short there were rips, ruined prints and tears.  So to avoid this happening for a third time, I left my prints for a LONG time, a very long time before I put them under the frame to pop in the yellow ink for the bottom part of the pineapple.

I was so scared that it wasn't going to work but thankfully they all turned out amazingly!   There were some issues with my pressure of putting the ink through but apart from that I still think they're awesome!  I've got a few friends who want some when I'm done with assessment, so you never know I could ditch interior design and go into printmaking!

I don't know how many prints I produced over the two days but I know that I'm going to be happy with what I can submit with my folio!  Now all that is left to do is collect my last  prints from uni, select which ones go into my self directed part of my folio, finish off my technical appraisal and finish my journal!  I'm a but worried I'll run out of space in my journal but if that happens I'll just have to go out and buy a new one of stick pages into the back of my original journal!  Decisions decisions!

When I get my prints back from assessment, I'm going to be framing a few of them and putting them up in my room!  I'll also take better more aesthetically pleasing photos of them to show on here!  I was going to have more photos of the other prints I did but they're photos that I've taken for my journal and you know, I'm not really going to stick them in a blog post haha

Hope you are having an amazing time wherever you are in the world!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

One Down - One To Go!

Ah my goodness.  I have 15 days of semester left for this year.  15 days.

I handed my furniture assignment in on Monday and was able to hand it in hours before it was due which is a real achievement for me.  Time management usually isn't my strong point, as I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'll always want to have everything 100% before I move on.  This time, for this furniture assignment, I made so many lists of what I needed to do to keep me on track and it helped so much!  I also think starting my assignment early also played a key role haha!

I'd written down where I wanted to be by Friday afternoon and around midday on Thursday saw I was actually a day ahead of where I wanted to be at and it was such a good feeling!  All my drawings were done and all that was left was to scan them and put them in a document and type in all the annotations I'd previously written up.  And after that all I needed to do was write about sustainability and finish my furniture schedule.

By Sunday afternoon the entire assignment was finished and for the first time in I don't know how many nights, I had a nice long relaxing sleep!

Now all that's left is my art folio which I am not looking forward too!  I've got to finish a 500 word technical statement about an artist I've chosen to look further into and I've already done over half of that which is good!  I'm a little worried about the practical stuff for it, as I'm not too confident with my concept but I did come up with another idea last night so if my original doesn't work out I've always got up a back up plan!

I also need to do journal work.  Still.  I went 100% with furniture so my journal has been vacant for a while and I need to give that a little bit of attention!  Can we also just appreciate my two attempts at a silk screen print.  Left side:  YES!  Right side:  NOOOOO!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

October = Stressful Month At Uni

I can believe it's October.  When due dates for assignments draw closer and closer my eyes are always on the calendar, thinking whether I'll be able to have my assignments done on time and then wondering where the year has gone!

Time flies when you're having fun.  That's a saying I'd hear often, especially when I was younger and you'd be on a play date and it would feel like you'd only been there for five minutes and then it's time to go!  But seriously I feel this year, and most recently, this year has gone through so fast!  I've got my second last assignment due this coming Monday at 4pm and then around two weeks after that I have my art folio due and then that's me done for the year with uni!

Well there is the daunting wait for results but uni will be over in less than a month!

I'd have to say this has been my favourite year at uni.  I've pushed myself incredibly hard and have seen the results, I've got so many new skills under my belt, met amazing people, done amazing things - it's just been an amazing year!  Sure there have been downsides with stresses of assignments and what not but on the whole I think 2015 has been my most favourite year at uni - it's easily been the year were I have been the most proud of what I have produced and achieved!

Everyone at uni is turning semi nocturnal, myself included!  For a while I've been waking up somewhere between 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning and working through til sometimes 2:30 the next day!  I find I'm most productive in the wee hours of the morning, and although some people thing that's a tad odd, you have to do what is the best and if being awake while the moon is up then so be it!

The majority of the students in my art class are slightly frazzled as they don't know what to do for their final bit of the folio.  I'm one of those students haha I've got a few ideas running around my head but I need to settle on one and look further into it!  And then get into the studio and make prints!  Also then let them dry fully, so none rip like they did the last two times!  Let me tell you, there were tears last Friday when I went to show my dad some of the prints I made and then realised they were all stuck together!  SO ANNOYING!

And I know I'm quite late for this post but uni calls!  When this second last assignment is submitted, I'm probably going to sleep in hahaha but there will be some new posts coming!

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

Instagram Diary | September

I cannot believe it's October!  How crazy!??!!  Can time please slow down because I have assignments to do and time is running out and I'm going to start stressing in three, two one.....

Uni is at that joyous point of the semester where all the final assignments are due essentially at the same time and the students just LOVE that!  Time management can only go so far and a common trait of uni students, expecially in my degree, is that we all become nocturnal students.  Except the only difference between us and badgers and owls is that they get to rest during the day whereas we don't.  Oh the joys!

My Instagram has definitely gotten more brighter with the warmer weather coming!  I say coming because the other night we had an intense thunder storm and it wasn't fun!  It was right on top of where I live and I've been wearing an eye mask while I sleep and yeah the lightening lit up the room and I wasn't happy!  I really don't like thunder storms!
