Christmas Day

The weather has cooled down, although it's a little bit sticky still but Christmas Day is coming to a close.

I've had a wonderful day with my family.  Although the weather didn't bring along the white Christmas I've been longing for for as long as I can remember, being with the ones I love is something which can't be beaten.

Whether you celebrate the 25th of December with presents and food and carols, or it's just another regular Sunday, I hope your day was an incredible one and I hope it was full of love and happiness.

Now let us wait to see how long it takes for the Easter eggs to start appearing.... ehehehe

Until next time, keep smiling and don't get your tinsel in a tangle ;)   Em xx

Christmas Eve Eve

When I was little I thought I was pretty smart when I'd go around saying "Merry Christmas Eve Eve", I probably even convinced myself that I was the only person who ever thought to celebrate the eve of Christmas Eve.  Ah the life of a younger Emma!

But still today is Christmas Eve Eve!  I can't believe how fast this Festive season has gone!  Next thing and all the Easter chocolate will be making an appearance!

I'm currently watching Carols in the Domain and this really reminds me of my childhood.  I would watch these without fail every year and it's still a dream of mine to go to one in person instead of watching it through a tv screen.  I love Christmas music and am that person who will have a cheeky listen it throughout the year....  Sorry but a bit of Buble is sometimes what the soul needs!

Thinking of these carols, I remember I always wanted to be in the orchestra.  Have probably well missed my chance but you know a girl can still dream!

Tomorrow, won't be all that interesting for me as I've set myself the task of cleaning my room.  Again.  I went looking for my water colour things today because I have an idea I want to try..  Made an absolute mess of my room trying to find everything!  Looked under my bed and all my uni papers and that fell and I just sighed.  Full on sighed out and yes I should have fixed it up there and then but having another sort out of everything and getting rid of scraps tomorrow will be a good thing!

I did find my water colour things in the end and have dabbled with the pencils and will be doing the water aspect of everything later! :)

But for now I am going to keep singing along to the Christmas music and probably have a little boogie too!!

Until next time, keep smiling and don't get your tinsel in a tangle ;)   Em xx

Baking Christmas Cookies For My Family!!

If you saw yesterdays post you would have read about how I had a plan.

I wanted to surprise my fam by baking some Christmas goodies and have them sitting out on the bench all decorated by the time they got home.  Didn't happen!  However, today is a different day and my family is going to have a little surprise when they're home!!

Yesterday I made some simple Christmas Cookies and used a recipe from Taste but did different icing as I didn't have any lemons.  I had some fun making these haha recipe was pretty simple and it only needed four ingredients so I'm going this should be fine but the difficulty was for capable cooks and like I said yesterday, challenge accepted for me to mess this up!

I'll link the original recipe and then I'll write out below how I went about the recipe.  It's pretty much the same but I did a few things differently to work with what equipment I had in the kitchen!

Christmas Cookies (Biscuit Men from Taste)

  • 250g chilled unsalted butter (chopped)
  • 2 cups (300g) plain flour
  • 3/4 cup (165g) caster sugar
  • 1 egg

  • Combine the butter and flour.  I used a hand mixer and then a wooden spoon for this as we don't have a food processor.  The flour went everywhere at the start so I ended up taking out majority of the flour and then swapping to a smaller bowl and going from there instead of all my ingredients going all over me and the bench!  You want to do this til it resembles breadcrumbs but mine looked like large couscous and it still ended up working!  Add the caster sugar and combine.  I had swapped back to my original bigger mixing bowl.  Turn the mixture out onto a floured surface and knead for 1 minute or until smooth.  I know I went for longer than this because I found it quite relaxing!  Divide in half and press into discs, enclose/wrap this up in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 190 degrees C.  Line some baking trays with baking paper and set these aside for later.  Roll dough out on a floured surface and roll them til they're 4-5mm thick.  Mine weren't even and this showed in baking but with a bit more practice we'll be good for the next time I make these!  Using a cookie cutter (pick whatever takes your fancy, I used a Christmas Tree and a star) cut shapes out from the dough and place these on your trays.  Re-roll the dough and continue to cut out your shapes until all the dough has been used!  Bake for until light golden.  You'll see I haven't put a time on how long to leave these in the oven and this is because I strongly suggest you keeping an eye on them while they're baking as we're all going to have different ovens!  I cooked mine between 10-13 minutes and we had a varied success...  But it all comes down to your oven, so make sure to check in on them regularly to see how they're traveling!!

Mine had a varied success but they all still are pretty tasty and I've got no problem with my fam not eating them hahahah
So that was yesterday and today I knew I was going to do icing of some sort.  The original recipe includes a lemon icing but with no lemons that wasn't going to happen so I ended up melting some chocolate and using this as my icing.  I know there are going to be countless icing recipes so you can just pick one you love and use that one!
We didn't have any piping bags and although in high school I had done piping using baking paper, I didn't want to do this again because I knew how much it frustrated me!  So I grabbed a small plastic bag and spooned the melted chocolate into that and then snipped on a tiny bit of the corner.  It worked really well I have to say and even though my piping skills aren't award worthy I'm still quite happy with how they turned out!

You can decorate these however you want and put on any extra little things.  I grabbed some 100s and 1000s and also these little tiny silver balls (apparently they're called Petit Dragees....) and sprinkled these over some of the trees, and left other trees with just the chocolate.

My cookies are now chilling in the fridge and hopefully they will put a smile on my fams face when they see them!

This is one thing I love about this time of year - seeing the ones you love smile and be happy.  And if a simple Christmas Cookies with interesting decoration on top does that then I'm happy!

Christmas is just around the corner!!  Have you been baking anything?  Let me know in the comments!

Until next time, keep smiling and don't get your tinsel in a tangle ;)   Em xx

When Christmas Baking Doesn't Go Your Way!!

Today I woke up with a plan.  I had actually had this plan in my mind for a few days now and woke up thinking today is the day.

And then life happened.

I pressed snooze on my alarm twice and then scrolled for a while before I thought I should probably get up!  I wasn't feeling the best either so that didn't help with my mood either!! :/

And so a few hours later than expected I started to make some really simple and easy Christmas Cookies.  And you were meant to see those cookies instead of this post but you'll just have to come back tomorrow to see them!

Level of difficulty was "capable cook" and I was thinking hmmmm challenge accepted for me to mess this up!  Long story short (longer version will be up tomorrow) the cookies are edible hahaha it was a mixed batch but I did find it relaxing to be baking so all in all I enjoyed the process!

I really wanted to think of another interesting and more engaging post to publish today instead of the baking one I had anticipated but everything I was thinking of required quite a bit of time.  But I guess on the flip side I now have more content that I'll be able to write about which you will hopefully enjoy!

If you like some simple Christmas cookies with a bit of a pinterest-fail type aspect to them then I think you're going to enjoy tomorrows post!

People You Should Watch At Christmas Time! *And All The Time*

YouTube becomes very festive at this time of the year!  Very festive indeed!!

With so many content creators doing Vlogmas and main channel videos being all things Christmas related, if you weren't already in the Christmas spirit you just need to watch a handful of video and you'll be wanting to wrap yourself up in tinsel and wrapping paper!!!

I was away for the start of December and when I got back I had quite a few videos waiting to be watched in my watch later folder on YouTube..  And when I saw quite a few I mean hundreds.  209 videos to be exact.  I am still making my way through them all but more keep appearing and I feel like it's a never ending feed of videos!!  Which on one hand is great because who doesn't love festive videos but on the other hand there isn't enough time!

I usually watch some while I'm having breakfast or lunch at home, when I'm doing chores, when I'm meant to be doing chores and that but I'm procrastinating, and I'll sometimes have one playing on my phone while I'm doing something on my laptop!  And now while I am loving all the ones I'm watching there are a few which I've gone through first and just really love!  So I thought I'd share with you some of the people who I am watching and loving this festive season!

Zoella.  And this can't come as a surprise to see Zoe here!  She is producing so much content and I am loving it all!!  I just got up to date with her 24 Days of Zoella videos and it definitely made folding washing and doing the dishes go so much faster!  Zoe, I think is just the definition of Christmas.  SO VERY FESTIVE!  And the Christmas jumpers.  I would one day love to have a Christmas somewhere where I am able to wear a Christmas jumper because I feel like we're missing out in Australia!!

Niomi Smart.  Another one of my favourite Youtubers!  Starting vlogmas off in Paris??!!  I remember seeing this and thinking man oh man this is going to be incredible!  What I love about Niomi is there a mixture between homey, casual days and then days where she is away in Paris or at a Christmas party, there is just a nice mix!  Also I have major envy of her flat and it's making me want to buy so many things even though I'm still living with my family!!

MsRosieBea.  I have a whole new appreciation for Rosie after seeing her videos this month.  I don't know what it is, whether it's her being at university and we're seeing this or the textiles bits I've seen in her videos but I tend to click on her videos straight away instead of putting them to watch later!  I love Rosie vlogging because her personality really shows through and not going to lie, I loved seeing it when she did some weaving because I really enjoyed that when I did a textiles unit at university!

Jamie and Nikki.  Now last but not least, I love this little family from Melbourne!  I would watch these guys while I was having breaks from study and assignments and I so wish I could meet them!  They upload every Wednesday and Sunday and if you aren't subscribed, you definitely should!  One thing I really love about these guys is how they capture wherever they go, you really get a sense of the place after watching their videos!

Now there are so many others that I'm watching and I'm sure we'd all be subscribed to many of the same content creators!  Let me know down in the comments who you are watching over the festive season, you many have someone new for me to check out!

Until next time, keep smiling and don't get your tinsel in a tangle ;)   Em xx

My Graduation Day!!!

This has to be one of my proudest moments to date.

My Graduation Day!

I have officially graduated from university!!!  This is just surreal.

Over the years that I've been at university, there have been so many hurdles, obstacles and challenges which have completely pushed me to my absolute limits.  There have been oh so many tears, rants, screams, frustrated sighs, many many yawns from lack of sleep.

But there have also been some absolutely incredible moments.  Tears of happiness, that relief of submitting assignments and then receiving grades.  I've met I don't know how many amazing people and have made life long friendships.

The amount of new skills I've been able to pick up along the way is unreal and they're ones that I'll be able to use now and in the future.  Granted I still don't understand why Photoshop likes crashing on me all the time but 'm sure we'll move past that!!

I've also grown so much as a person.  When I think back to what I was like when I first started university and now look at the person I am today, I've changed and grown so much.

I am just really proud of myself and everything that I have achieved!

On Saturday was my Graduation Ceremony and the weather was threatening to rain but amazingly this didn't happen and we have such a lovely day to celebrate our time at university.  It was surreal that this day had finally arrived and getting ready in the morning, it just felt different to any other day where I was getting ready for something important.

I wore a dress from Jeans West.  I remember seeing it in the shop window and told mum about it not long after!  It was an Alessia Halter Broderie dress and the fabric detailing was just so beautiful.  I found it quite amusing as once I had it home and tried it on to show everything, it reminded me of how similar my Grade 12 Graduation was to this.  I had worn a white dress with lace like detailing at the bottom hem and they look like they could be related!  It's funny how history can repeat itself!

I had bought a pair of white sandals to wear but when I put everything together, decided to wear my old yet very trusty black flats.  These flats have been through a lot with me.  My Grade 10 and 12 Graduation, countless music competitions and presentations, my Graduating Exhibition and now for my university graduation day.  I kept my makeup as I normally would because it is what I felt comfortable with and didn't want to rock up looking like a completely different person!!  I straightened my hair and left it down as I knew with the mortar board (fancy hats) we'd need to wear, I needed to have my hair down or  would not have worked!

I had some help getting into my gown and everything, the hood (pink bit of my outfit) I had no idea how it was meant to go and it was eventually pinned into place so it didn't move!  Being dressed in everything made the day seem more real if that makes sense.  Again, very surreal.

We stood in lines for the Town and Gown Procession but when we started to move we all got jumbled up hahaha!  It was funny to see all the people in town looking at us.  Some were there to watched their loved ones graduating and some clearly had no idea that hundreds and hundreds or Hogwarts looking people would be walking through town!  I think we messed up their Christmas shopping a bit!

When the walk was over we somewhat made our way back to our lines so it would be easy to sit down.  I was walking into Albert Hall and saw my mum, dad and older brother and I can't describe what I was feeling.  It was just amazing.

The ceremony itself was nice, there were a few laughs, some lovely music and it was crazy to see how many people were graduating in their respective degrees!  I was in row M so had a bit of time before it was my time to walk across the stage.  When it was my time to leave my seat I sent my fam a quick smile and then got worried about my Mortar Board.  It felt like it was going to fall off and I wish I had just putted it towards my face a bit more!!

I didn't trip walking up the stairs or when I had to walk across the stage and didn't stack it walking down the other set of stairs so round of applause for me!  I was able to see the photo of me up on stage and I am pleased to say I didn't look like a stunned mullet!!

When I left the stage, a lady congratulated me on my graduation and also of becoming a University of Tasmania Alumni.  I was given a little pouch and then a man shook my hand, congratulated me and I was handed an envelope would help my certificate!  I was about to walk  up the isle towards my seat when another hand was held out for me to shake and I saw a guy who I had gone to high school and college with and I was very surprised but it was also so very kind of him!

I made it back to my seat and my family looked so proud.  I'm getting emotional thinking back on it!!

After the ceremony was completed, we went out to the park to take photos and the wind decided to make an appearance.  I have quite a few outtake photos and they're quite funny!!

I can also see and understand why the throwing of the hats is something which they don't get us to do for health and safety.   My hat went flying and then hit the girl next to me right on the top of her head, and they're quite pointy and solid those fancy hats!

I spent the rest of the day with my family and then morning after we went out to breakfast which I just loved.  All in all, it was an incredible weekend!

If you're still reading, I just want to say a massive thank you to all of you who had sent me messages of congratulations.  If I could give you all a hug and say thank you in person, I would in a heat beat!  And another thank you for all your support and words of encouragement over the years.  I can't thank you enough.

Until next time, keep smiling and don't get your tinsel in a tangle ;)   Em xx

My Day On Thursday - Secret Santa and Graduation Robes {15.12.16)

I woke up a little bit after 6:30am and this was the earliest I'd been up since waking up to see the first sunrise of summer while I was over in Adelaide and to be honest, I was struggling!  Late-ish wake ups have been a regular occurrence since finishing university and it was fun trying to get myself together in the morning!

My friends from music had organised a Secret Santa and the day had finally arrived where we would finally come together for a spot of lunch and have all all of our gifts exchanged.  I met up with Amity and Jasmine in the morning and it was nice to see the Christmas Tree in the mall!  It was huge, huge was an understatement!

We walked around and did a bit of Christmas shopping and went to sit in Royal Park to have a little chocolate picnic and have some long overdue catch ups under a tree!  I hadn't seen everyone since our end of year concert so we all had a lot to catch up on!

We had some Lindt Chocolate and I also had a Kinder Surprise because I'm an adult!  And we also had some fun with the new sticker feature on Snapchat!!  Many, many laughs!!

A short walk to Seaport, we met up with Emily and Claire where we would be having some lunch and exchanging (in secret) our gifts for Secret Santa.  It was awesome seeing everyone open their gifts and everyone had bought such thoughful gifts!  Jasmine and I had each other for Secret Santa which was quite funny and Jasmine got me some M&Ms and this Niffler model set and book which I could have squealed at when I saw it!  When we went to see Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, I fell in love with the cheeky little Niffler!!

Definitely going to be making this very soon!

Amity also got us all these cute Christmas Tree Decorations which I'll hang up somewhere in my room!  Was right up my alley of things that I adore!  I have such amazing friends!!! :) :) :)

We ate at Levee Food Co and I'd been here before to get ice cream years ago but never to sit down and have a meal.  I'd looked at their menu the night before and saw there were two risottos, a vegan one and then a chicken one!  I got the vegan one as it had mushrooms and pumpkin and I love those foods so I couldn't go past it!

After we ate and chatted and had some drinks, I was going to be meeting up with a uni friend Megan to go and collect our robes for the graduation ceremony!  I also hasn't seen Megan in ages so it was nice to see her and catch up and also try and figure out where exactly we had to collect everything from!

I've got my robes hanging up and on the outside of my wardrobe and I think it's now finally sinking in that I'm graduating!!  The robes have these insane shoulder pads and they're pretty long too but I am so looking forward to getting dressed up to wear them tomorrow!  Our faculty has a bright pink sash too which is interesting!  Oh and the funky little hat whose name I've forgotten!  That is so cool!  I can't wait to show you all some photos of my Graduation!!!

Still on the robes, I think this is the closest I'll get to ever going to Hogwarts!  You literally feel like you're in their school uniform when you're wearing them!

Until next time, keep smiling and don't get your tinsel in a tangle ;)   Em xx

Music On Repeat: Volume 5

You all know how much I love a good tune and I love sharing what I've been listening too with you all!

Got some more of my favourite songs - hope you enjoy!

Glory Days by Little Mix.  I have to have to have to have to start of with an album.  Just loving the heck of this album!  I tweeted that this was going to be my summer album and I still stand by this!  Such a different sound from the gals but I am loving it!  My favourites from the album are Power, Shout Out To My Ex, No More Sad Songs, Nothing Else Matters and Nobody Like You.  Honestly I could have listed the entire album but those songs are what I click for the most, especially Power!

This Town, Niall Horan.  I have always loved Niall and when I saw that he'd dropped a single, did I drop what I was doing to listen to it?  Yes and no haha I delayed having breakfast to give it a listen and it was well worth it!

Mercy, Shawn Mendes. I knew of Shawn Mendes but I never listened to any of his music until recently where I heard him singing live in a video on Facebook and I felt like kicking myself!  Because his voice is incredible and Mercy would have to be my favourite of his!

King, Years & Years.  I remember I liked this song when it first came out but I'd only listen to it whenever it came on the radio.  I started listening to it again towards the end of my university semester and it's a good song to jam out too!

My Love Is Gone, SAFIA.  Facebook ads, you won.  I kept hearing this song on Facebook and got so annoyed of only hearing a snippet of it that I just needed to hear the entire things.  And you guessed it, I love it!

If you want to know what else I've been listening to, I will leave my tunes playlist in this post (if I can remember how!!)

Until next time, keep smiling and don't get your tinsel in a tangle ;)   Em xx
