You Can Be Your Own Unique Niche

I have written this post, I don't know how many times.  I didn't want to offend anyone so scrapped the first draft.  I then didn't know how to structure this, so the second draft was also scrapped.  And many other drafts have been and gone and now we're here.  And I don't know how this is going to turn out but let us just see how we get along shall we?

Niches and blogging.  They go together like tea and biscuits.  That also probably wasn't the best complimentary food pairings I could have come up with but English Breakfast Tea and a choc ripple biscuit is one of the most simple and lovely things in life.

If there is one thing which is a consistent piece of advice people are given when starting a blog, is to decide what content you are going to fill your blog with?  Will you be a travel blog?  A blog that specialises in crafts?  Are you going to join in with the beauty community?

In other words, what will be your niche?

When I started thinking about blogging, I did a little brainstorm of what I was going to blog about.  I wrote down a list of topic ideas and it was all over the place.  A bit like my head, but you can see my 3rd blogoversary post which shows my brainstorming page here).  Lifestyle, beauty and fashion (lol), design, day in the life, tags and thoughts - the list went on and I just wanted to have range of topics which I could share my thoughts and experiences on.  I didn’t want to be a blog which was just me writing responses to tag questions, and I didn’t just want to write about my travel dreams.

There was a stage where I was going to be a student blogger and blog about student life and everything that comes with being a student.  However, I knew I wasn't going to be a student forever.  Imagine how much that would cost hahaha I didn't want to enclose my blogging world to one thing which wouldn't last forever.  I have many thoughts which were from a wide range of topics and I wanted to share them.

A lot of the time, in advice posts for new bloggers, you’re told to find a niche and stick to that niche.  I think it’s so important to blog about something you’re passionate about because it really comes across to readers however, sometimes I feel like new bloggers feel pressured into picking this niche and then sticking to it.  And this is definitely how I felt when I was looking more seriously into blogging.

You can't push a circle through a square hole.  We are all individuals and have our own words to bring to an abundance of topics.

Anyone also realise how weird the word niche looks after you’ve seen it a few times?  But moving on!

For a long time, I felt out of the loop with blogging because I wasn't in a niche.  How could I join beauty blogger groups on Facebook when I didn't blog about beauty?  I couldn't contribute to that.  And Twitter chats!  Doesn't help when they're set at an awkward time thanks to time zones but again, I felt like I couldn't contribute because I didn't fit into a niche.  And this went on for a long time.  I'd still go along and upload what I was happy with what I was producing but I just felt like an outsider within the blogging world because I was Emma no niche.

But that has changed after a thought of thinking and realising a few things.  My niche is me.  emmadaisy is my niche.  And I love that.

LIFESTYLE | THOUGHTS | A PERSONAL BLOG - This is what you see at the top of my blog.  I write about what I enjoy to write and read about.  You'll probably have read my blog and say "Emma, I don't know what you're rambling on about, your blog fits in with this niche!!"  My blog is all over the place.  I write about lifestyle things.  I write about food, things I've loved and not so much loved, important topics I want to bring up, music, tags (because you know me I love a good tag), I write about how I'm feeling, I used to constantly ramble on about university and I've even dabbled in beauty!

My blogging niche is emmadaisy.  It's a personal blog and content will always be unique to me.  Unique to how I'm feeling, what is happening in my life, you know how it is.

If you want your blog to be all about beauty, you do you!  Write what you are passionate about, enjoy writing about content that you are proud and happy of.  And just know that if you want to step outside the zones of the niche, you can.  It's your blog.  Your little space in the internet where you can write whatever your heart desires.

I also fully understand that people aren't going to agree with me on this, so please just take this with a pinch of salt because we all have differing opinions and that is great!  Let's have a chat about it in the comments :)  what are your thoughts on niches?

Until next time, keep smiling :)  Em xx

PS!  Come and say hello!!! :) x

  1. I totally agree! I don't have a niche, and sometimes I've felt like an outsider because of that. But I prefer to write about whatever I want to write about, and not pigeonhole myself to something that, in a year's time, I may not even be interested in anymore! Life's too short - do what you love, whatever it is, and don't worry about fitting in, I say!

    1. I'm the same, I've had posts I'd write which were like a little series but they're ones that I'm not interested in anymore so I'll write about something different :) Em xx

  2. This is exactly how I felt when I started blogging. I did lots of tags then I did lots of website reviews then I tried using Polyvore and Pinterest but I wasn't comfortable with those posts or the direction that my blog was headed. I was trying to fit into a particular group. Now, I know exactly what I'd like to publish. Much like your blog, I blog about everything that I am passionate about. :) Great post.

    1. We should all have the freedom to post about what we want to post about! And change is good, and it's also completely up to the individuals circumstances :) Em xx
